Annual Report (2013)

 Board of Directors

Jan 12, 2014

The Halifax Chinese Language School (HCLS) was established in January 1993 to promote the Chinese language learning and Chinese culture in Halifax. During the past 21 years, the school has experienced its growth and success, thanks to all teachers, volunteers, students and their parents. Currently the school has six Chinese language classes, three math classes and one art/drawing class, and is an important part of the vibrant life of the Chinese Community in Nova Scotia.

I: Report on the Previous Annual Meeting

The school called for an annual general meeting on Feb 03, 2013 to elect ten members to the 2013 Board of Directors of the school. They are Sam Li (President of Board), Michael Ruan (Vice President of Board), Jinyu Sheng (Principal), Jason Gu (Vice Principal), Li Zhai (Vice Principal and Treasurer), Mei Wang (Recreation and Representative of School Teachers), Jifeng Zhang (Chair of Parent Committee), Gang Chen (Vice Chair of Parent Committee), Shiliang Shan (Assistant Treasurer) and Bill Bu (Honorary President of Board). The election of the Board of Directors is required by Canadian law as the school is officially registered as a non-profit organization.

II: Review of the Activities of 2013

In 2013, the school has focused on its core function of providing a unique opportunity and environment for our children to learn Chinese language and also improve their math skills and arts/drawing skills. Additionally, it had organized Student Safety Supervision, “China Root-Seeking” Summer Camp, Annual Summer Barbeque and the 2013 Chinese New Year Party, etc. It had also enhanced school’s website (www.halifaxcls.ca).

III: Outlook for Year 2014

The Board advises the 2014 Board of Directors to focus more on improving the quality of teaching, stimulating student’s interest in learning and applying Chinese language.

IV: Our Thanks to All Volunteers, Teachers, Students and their Parents

The Board would like to thank volunteers and teachers for their contributions to the school. Many volunteers helped in our academic programs, student safety supervision program and social events. Without them, our events and achievements would not be possible. We would also like to thank all the students and their parents for choosing the Halifax Chinese Language School during the past year. Without them, the school would not exist. The President of the Board also wishes to personally thank the members of the Board during 2013 for their support and hard work throughout the year.

Best wishes to all for happiness and prosperity in the year of the Horse!
